Spanish Jewish Community commends Balearic Parliament for reparation to descendants of converted Jews

The Federation of Spanish Jewish Communities (FCJE) acknowledges and appreciates the gesture of the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, which unanimously approved a Non-Legislative Proposal presented by the Popular Party.

This proposal recognizes the marginalization and discrimination suffered by the descendants of converted Jews, known as ‘xuetes.’ The approved text urges the regional government to restore the memory of persecuted xuetes and promote the dissemination of Mallorcan Jewish heritage.

At this point, the FCJE respectfully requests the regional government to include the history of the Jewish people in the archipelago in the school curriculum for two purposes: to educate about the contribution of descendants of Jewish origin to society in general and to combat the antisemitism that arises from ignorance.

The FCJE celebrates the gesture of the Parliament, which represents the rectification of a historical error that caused much suffering for the chuetas who lived in conditions of genuine marginalization.”
