Real Madrid star Marco Asensio found himself at the centre of a Middle East social media storm after posting a photo of himself in front of Jerusalem’s Western Wall.
The Spanish ace, 21, posted the selfie tagging it “cultural visit” with an emoji of the Israeli flag.
But the image has caused controversy after he was strongly criticised by social media users demanding he delete the post.
Pro-Israeli followers, however, have praised the young star for his appreciation of Israel.
Asensio was in Israel for Spain’s World Cup qualifier.
One Twitter user claimed: “It is not a country that is called Israel, is the occupied Palestine.”
Another said that he had made a mistake if “all your followers are Arabs.”
A third asked: “Why are you getting your Arab followers angry with an occupation flag? It is Palestine.”
