Isaac Benzaquen: “The Spanish Jewish Community has youth as a priority”

The President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain (FJCE) Isaac Benzaquen was interviewed by the Spanish Radio and Television Corporation (RTVE) on “Shalom”, their weekly program dedicated to Jewish issues.

President Benzaquen expressed that the situation of the Community, regarding COVID measures, has changed radically. He pointed out that all the Synagogues in the country are open and that communities have regained their normal routine.

At the same time, he highlighted that the FCJE has two important objectives: permanent contact with the local communities and fostering the involvement of the youth in Jewish life.

He listed all the activities that the FCJE has organized for the youth alongside the local communities such as leadership seminars in Barcelona and Melilla, a Summer Camp in Madrid, a Bat Mitzvah trip to Cordoba, and a youth visit to concentration camps in Poland.

The FCJE is also organizing a seminar for the youth on antisemitism and the prevention of hate crime.

Benzaquen also expressed that for the FCJE it’s important to organize projects and initiatives for the elders of the community. During the pandemic, they held seminars and workshops on different issues with a successful outcome.

Recently, they organized a trip for them to Andalucia, where they met local mayors and celebrated a Shabbat.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, he said that the FCJE is helping and supporting 32 families of refugees that are currently being hosted by the community.

In his ending remarks, he wished a very happy Rosh Hashanah to the Jewish Community.
