Following neo-Nazi march, archbishop of Madrid expresses solidarity with Jewish community

The Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, Carlos Osoro, has called the President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), Isaac Benzaquén, to express his solidarity in the aftermath of the “intolerable attacks” against the Jewish community during a march in honour of the Pro-Nazi Blue Division.

“I just spoke with the president of the FCJE, Isaac Benzaquén, to convey to him the closeness of the Catholic Church in Madrid after the intolerable attacks they have suffered. Together with our Jewish brothers we pray for the end of all violence and any religious persecution” Carlos Osoro stressed in a message on Twitter.

The shocking antisemitic remarks heard at the march, which had been authorised to take place, have been brought to the attention of the Madrid Public Prosecutor’s Office.

The march also featured a religious service held by a priest named Javier Utrilla, who according to press sources is affiliated to a Catholic sect named the Lefebvrians, who have not been in communion with the Vatican since the excommunication of its founder, Marcel Lefebvre.

The FCJE is Spain’s EJC affiliate.
