An Iranian couple is said to have mapped and planned to murder three Swedish Jews, including the President of the Official Council of Swedish Jewish Communities, Aron Verständig.
“It felt uncomfortable. I got worried. As a parent of young children, you feel that you have a very big responsibility for your child’s safety,” said Mr Verständig.
“It’s like an assassination plot, another state is going after a Swedish citizen.”
The attack is said to have been commissioned by Iran to plan assassination attempts in Sweden. The couple is said to be connected to Iran’s military intelligence service.
The information shows how the couple is said to have collected pictures and address information of Aron Verständig and two other Swedish Jews.
The Iranian couple was detained on probable cause but denied any crime in 2021.
Prosecutor Hans Ihrman said that suspicions about the murder plans were strengthened during the investigation.
“There was a survey. There were contacts with Iran. Then exactly how it was going to be carried out against the targets, that’s where we failed to get this necessary evidence that had been a prerequisite to being able to bring charges.”
The couple was deported to Iran in 2022, when they were considered to pose a serious security threat to Sweden.
