Sibiu Great Synagogue gate restored with German funding

The main gate of the Great Synagogue of Sibiu has a new main gate has been restored with financial support from the German Foreign Ministry.

The restoration is part of maintenance works carried out historic Synagogue on Constituţiei Street. With the financial support of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the active involvement of ‘itinerant journeymen’, the main gate has been restored and is now shining in new glory. Work was completed just in time for Hanukkah.

The German Consulate in Sibiu welcomed the religious diversity and the way it is lived in Sibiu, is still involved for a peaceful coexistence and active dialogue of different religious and ethnic groups in the city and the country and actively supports this coexistence through actions such as this one.

Sibiu, also known as Hermannstadt in German, Nagyszeben in Hungarian and Seben in Yiddish, was the capital of Transylvania and is the most important town of the  “Siebenburgen,” the seven fortress towns in the region settled by German Saxons in the 12th century.
