The Lisbon Jewish Community welcomed the Portuguese government’s condemnation of Iran’s attack on Israel and expressed their support for the Jewish state in a statement.
“The leadership of the Jewish Community of Lisbon welcomes the position expressly taken by the Prime Minister of Portugal to vehemently condemn Iran’s attack on Israel and to call for restraint, in order to avoid an escalation of violence”, reads their statement, which “urges the Portuguese Parliament to adopt the same position”.
For the Jewish Community of Lisbon (CIL), “standing alongside Israel at a time like this is an imperative for democratic nations”.
For CIL, “Portugal — whatever prism through which it is looked at — is today directly involved in a regional conflict and is an unquestionable victim of a proxy war”, in a reference to Iran’s arrest of a Portuguese-flagged ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
And adds that, faced with these acts of aggression, “Portugal will know how to rise to the circumstances, maintaining and even strengthening its support for Israel”.
CIL also considered that the capture of the ship is a “serious act of attack”, considering that this “flagrant violation of International Law must deserve careful attention from the Portuguese State and Government” and that it was “the same military forces that attacked and captured a Portuguese-flagged ship”, that attacked Israel.
