Austrian National Council joins #WeRemember campaign again this year

For the second consecutive year, the Austrian Parliament will once again be participating in the global #WeRemember campaign.

On the initiative of National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka, all national parliaments of the EU Member States as well as the European Parliament will participate in the campaign for the first time this year. For this purpose, the facade of the Parliament in the Hofburg on Vienna’s Josefsplatz will be illuminated with  “#WeRemember” until January 28.

“With the participation of the Austrian Parliament in the #WeRemember campaign, we commemorate the six million Jewish victims of National Socialism and send out a strong and visible signal against antidemitism,” said National Council President Wolfgang Sobotka.

“With the digital remembrance campaign, we also want to counter Holocaust denial and conspiracy myths on social media. Only when political life, the media and civil society vehemently reject antisemitism will there be lasting change,” he added.

January 27, 2022 will mark 77 years since the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and International Holocaust Remembrance Day . Since 2017, the World Jewish Congress and UNESCO have been calling for the #WeRemember campaign to mark this day.

In the digital commemoration campaign, photos can be posted on social media with a plaque that reads “#WeRemember.” Numerous buildings will also be illuminated with the hashtag. The aim is to remember the millions of victims of the Holocaust and to send a signal against antisemitism and hatred.

The members of the National Council and the President of the Federal Council joined a photo-op before the start of yesterday’s National Council session. Mr. Sobotka also met with the Executive Vice President of the World Jewish Congress, Maram Stern.

On Jan. 27, a virtual panel discussion will take place on the occasion of the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Holocaust.
