Mathias Middelberg, the spokesperson on domestic policy for the CDU/CSU parliamentary group in Germany’s Bundestag, wants to have the naturalisation of anti-Jewish-minded people in Germany banned. “In the citizenship law, it should be explicitly regulated that naturalisations of persons who have committed antisemitic motivated acts are excluded,” A corresponding amendment to the law is to be voted on in parliament this week.
“Anyone who publicly incites against Jews, questions the existence of the state of Israel or burns the Israeli flag should not be allowed to become a German citizen,” Middelberg said. Accordingly, the following sentence is to be added to the citizenship law: “Naturalisation is excluded if the foreigner has committed an antisemitic motivated act.” In addition, the law should explicitly state that antisemitic motivated acts are incompatible with the Basic Law’s guarantee of human dignity.
In the last month, Germany has experienced a raise in antisemitic incidents, attributed to the recent conflict in the Middle East. Most recently, on 5 June, an unknown person threw an incendiary device at the synagogue in Ulm.
