The Consistoire of the Lower Rhine region of Eastern France has sharply condemned antisemitic slogans which were shouted as a ‘Gilets Jaunes’ demonstration passed by Strasbourg’s Great Synagogue.

In a statement, the Consistoire condemned the slogans “in front of Jewish citizens celebrating Shabbat, the weekly festival of rest and of peace”.

The Consistoire called on Yellow Vest organisers “to make sure that basic humanitarian principles are respected” during such marches. The incident was also condemned by the Prefect of the Lower Rhine Department Jean-Luc Marx and by the Mayor of Strasbourg, Roland Ries.
