“The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors” exhibition opens in Liechtenstein

As part of this year’s Holocaust Memorial Day, the impressive exhibition “The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors” was opened in Haus Gutenberg.

This exhibition gives a voice to the last witnesses of the Holocaust and their descendants. The commemoration was shaped by a moving connection between the past and the present by telling two contemporary witnesses present their personal history. 

In her speech, Liechenstein government councilor Dominique Hasler emphasized that antisemitism must not have any space in our society.

On January 27, 1945, the Red Army freed the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, in which over a million people lost their lives. This year marks the 79th anniversary of Liberation Day. Since 2002, the member states of the Council of Europe have been using this day to commemorate the victim of the Holocaust. A commemorative event has also been held in Liechtenstein for many years. This is organized in close cooperation with the Association of Liechtensteiner Friends of Yad Vashem.

This year’s Holocaust Memorial Day took place on the occasion of the vernissage for the exhibition “The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors” in the Gutenberg house. The exhibition tells the stories of the last witnesses in the form of portraits and films.

The exhibition is a project of the Gamaraal Foundation that supports Holocaust survivors and is involved in the area of ​​the Holocaust education against forgetting. 

In her opening speech, Foreign and Education Minister Dominique Hasler stated that the exhibition “The Last Swiss Holocaust Survivors” not only serves to document the memories of the horrors of the past. “Every memory is not only a look back, but also a bridge to the future. We are currently seeing how important this bridge is.”

Florian Marxer, board member of the Liechtenstein Friends of Yad Vashem Association, acknowledged the importance of Holocaust remembrance in his welcoming remarks and emphasized the responsibility of each individual.
