EJC condemns attacks on Bulgarian Jewish Community

(Brussels, June 26, 2023) – The European Jewish Congress expresses its deep concern over rising nationalism and antisemitism in Bulgaria and condemns attacks on the Organization of the Jews in Bulgaria “Shalom”. As the political representation of Bulgarian Jews, Shalom is affiliated to the European Jewsih Congress.

Far-right-nationalist Vazrazdane party head Kostadin Kostadinov’s comments that Professor Alexander Oscar, President of “Shalom”, as well as members of the Bulgarian Jewish community, are “nazis and fascists” represent the most sinister form of contemporary antisemitism.

Members of the Vazrazdane party have also been involved in expressing other forms of antisemitic speech, including allegations that Bulgarian Jews are disloyal to the country and prioritize foreign interests. Additionally, they have referred to Jews in Bulgaria as foreigners, implying a need for them to be careful how they behave.

The European Jewish Congress stands in firm solidarity with our friends and colleagues and the Jewish community in Bulgaria and calls on the Bulgarian government and institutions to undertake urgent steps to stop these antisemitic attacks and actions seeking to marginalise and intimidate the community.
