EJC Scandalized by the Theft of the “Arbeit Macht Frei” Entrance Sign from Auschwitz

The European Jewish Congress is shocked by the scandalous theft of the “Arbeit Macht Frei” entrance sign from the grounds of the Auschwitz Nazi death camp.

The wide iron “Arbeit Macht Frei” sign remains in the collective conscience as a cynical symbol of Nazi barbarism and is an integral part of today’s Auschwitz-Birkenau Museum.

“We are convinced that the Polish authorities will do their utmost to recuperate this historic sign and bring to justice the perpetrators of this unspeakable act. More than ever before, the commemoration of the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau must be marked on the 27th of January 2010 as a symbol of the fight against racism, xenophobia, anti-Semitism and historical revisionism, promoting peace, understanding and tolerance” stated EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor.

The European Jewish Congress (EJC) is the democratically elected umbrella body of Jewish communities in Europe. The EJC is organizing the 3rd World Holocaust Forum on International Holocaust Day, 27th of January 2010, in Krakow and on the grounds of Auschwitz-Birkenau.

EJC welcomes European Parliament resolution calling for extended sanctions against Iran

“The centrality of Iran in the destabilisation of the whole of the Middle East is evident to all and we welcome the Parliament’s resolution noting this fact. The time has come for total exclusion of the Islamic Republic from the international arena and targeted sanctions” said EJC President Dr Ariel Muzicant.
