The European Jewish Congress (EJC), in consultation with its affiliated Jewish communities, is launching a series of demonstrations across Europe in support of Israel’s defensive action against Hamas in Gaza.
This afternoon in Brussels and Amsterdam and later in the week in London, Rome, Berlin and Vienna, among others, European Jewish communities across the continent will rally against Hamas’ terrorism and rocket attacks on Israeli civilians. A similar rally was held in Paris last Sunday. The EJC and the European Jewish communities are actively taking a stand against the one-sided importation of the Israeli-Hamas conflict on European soil.
The EJC and its affiliated communities have also planned a series of diplomatic and political meetings with European governments and in particular the European Union, in order to better explain the Israeli defensive position and discuss the alarming rise of anti-Semitic incidents that are taking place in France, Sweden, the UK and elsewhere.
The EJC condemns these unacceptable acts of violence and vandalism and welcomes French President Nicolas Sarkozy’s remarks, stating that France would not tolerate violence linked to the Gaza crisis.
The EJC commends the President of the EU General Affairs and External Relations Council and Czech Foreign Affairs Minister Karel Schwarzenberg’s speech yesterday.
“It is clear that Hamas started the fighting and thus it is clear that it is to blame for the conflict” said Minister Schwarzenberg on return of the EU Troika visit to the Middle East.
Based in Brussels, the European Jewish Congress is the representative umbrella organisation of national Jewish communities. It federates democratically elected national Jewish community organisations in over 40 European countries uniting 2.5 million Jews across the continent.
