Palestine Action leader ordered to attend court on terrorism charge in the United Kingdom

The co-founder of Palestine Action has been summoned to court to face charges including an alleged terrorism offence.

Richard Barnard must appear before Westminster magistrates on September 18 accused of “expressing an opinion that is supportive of a proscribed organisation contrary to section 12 of the Terrorism Act 2000”.

He will also face two charges of encouraging or intending to encourage criminal damage. It follows an investigation by Counter Terrorism Policing North West into a demonstration in St Peter’s Square, Manchester, on October 8 last year.

The protest was held a day after the Hamas-led attack that killed almost 1,200 people in southern Israel.

The alleged terrorism offence and a charge of criminal damage relate to the demonstration. A second charge of criminal damage relates to a demonstration in Bradford on October 11.
