Liverpool’s oldest synagogue marks 150th anniversary

Liverpool’s oldest synagogue – one of the UK’s most historic – marked its 150th anniversary by launching six months of a broad range of events and activities, celebrating the city’s rich Jewish heritage and history.

Liverpool Old Hebrew Congregation’s Heritage Season was launched during a grand civic event at the renowned St George’s Hall, presented by legendary television personality and journalist Anne Robinson.

Civic and political representatives from the entire Liverpool City Region, including the Metro Mayor of the Liverpool City Region, the Lord Mayor of Liverpool, the Lord Lieutenant, and the High Sheriff, as well as university leaders and military representatives, took part in a procession through the historic location, where Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis was among those who gave an address.

The event marked the launch of events, ceremonies, concerts, lectures, performances, talks, tours, and walks to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the building, also known as Princes Road Synagogue, founded in 1874 and built in an eye-catching Gothic and Moorish Revival style. The shul featured prominently on a stamp released for the coronation of HM King Charles III.

Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis KBE congratulated everyone associated with the Princes Road Synagogue on their anniversary and said he was “looking forward to participating in the celebrations. Mazel Tov!”

Liverpool is home to one of the oldest Jewish communities in Britain, with Jewish traders settling there in the 18th century. Today, the Jewish community numbers around 3,000 people.
