BOD attacks ‘grotesque’ decision to allow woman who vandalised Warsaw ghetto wall to run antisemitism sessions

Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl has written to the Joint General-Secretaries of teachers’ union NEU to condemn the decision to allow a woman who sprayed “Free Gaza and Palestine” on a wall of the Warsaw Ghetto to organise “understanding antisemitism” workshops for the union.

Ewa Jasiewicz was condemned in 2010 after she daubed slogans on a wall at the site of the former ghetto in Poland where thousands of Jews were imprisoned and starved to their deaths under the Nazis.

The letter follows  revelations that in her role as an organiser with the NEU North West Region, National Team, Jasiewicz has been behind three recent sessions called “Understanding Antisemitism”, held for members of the National Education Union (NEU).

In the letter, Marie wrote: “We are profoundly disturbed by the news that an individual, who engaged in behaviour which the overwhelming majority of British Jews deem profoundly antisemitic, has been organising “understanding antisemitism” workshops for your union.

She added: “To have somebody with this sort of track record organising antisemitism workshops for you union is simply grotesque.”

Marie urged Joint General-Secretaries Mary Bousted and Kevin Courtney to ensure “this type of activity is not repeated. Not only does it do a disservice to your members, it also tarnishes the NEU’s reputation.”
