The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine strongly condemed the neo-Nazi march in Kyiv and demanded that those who condone neo-Nazi manifestations be brought to justice.
“It is 80 years since the beginning of the occupation of Ukraine by the Nazi troops this year. However, instead of honoring the memory of the victims of those tragic events who had been killed by the occupiers, the streets of Kyiv saw fans of the Waffen SS Galicia division, which was part of the Nazi troops during World War II,” it declared in a statement.
“Many people in Kyiv are outraged by the march that has taken place, as well as by the actions of those who made such a neo-Nazi demonstration possible.”
“Six years ago, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law on the fight not only against communist ideology, but also against neo-Nazism. However, in fact, there is no resistance to neo-Nazism in Ukraine. This is the reason for the march to have taken place in the capital in honor of the SS units, whose criminal activities had been condemned by the Nuremberg Tribunal.”
“The neo-Nazi march in Kyiv has caused irreparable damage to Ukraine’s reputation in the world,” the statement concluded.
The Jewish Confederation of Ukraine is the representative organisation of Jewish communities in the Ukraine and the country’s EJC affiliate.
