Roundup of Tunisian Jews remembered in online ceremony

The Society for the history of Tunisian Jews will organise an online commemoration of the 78th anniversary of the round-up of the Jews of Tunis by the SS and the establishment of forced labor camps in Tunisia.

The event will take place on 6 December 2020 from 10:45am-12:00. Registration is required.

The annual commemoration ceremony has been held in recent years at the Shoah Memorial in Paris, in the presence of government officials, diplomatic representatives from Tunisia, Germany and Israel in France, and various religious and civil society representatives

Various public figures were invited to this year’s ceremony, including Gabriel Attal, French government spokesman, and Anne Hidalgo, mayor of Paris.

The names of Tunisian Jews who died in the field of battle, of deportees who did not return from concentration and death camps in Europe and those murdered in Tunisian forced labor camps will be read.

The event seeks to raise awareness of a little-known episode of the Shoah that took place outside of Europe and “to allow the memory of the victims of the Nazis on the Tunisian soil to live on beyond the dispersal of a large part of the Tunisian Jewish community after decolonisation,” read a statement by the Society for the history of Tunisian Jews
