EJC Executive member Ruben Vis presented UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, with the first copy of his essay on state neutrality in relation to religion.

Vis argues that the state is not secular, not even in a society that is now secularised, but that the state has a neutral position with regard to religion and why this neutral position is so essential for Judaism.

Shaheed received the piece in Rotterdam where he met with members of the local Jewish community. Together with Mr. Vis, they informed Shaheed about being able or less able to experience Judaism freely in the Netherlands today.

Ruben Vis discussed the scope of his essay entitled ‘Neutral and therefore not secular’, the practical importance of freedom of religion for the Jewish community.
