Swiss Jews call for greater protection of Jewish sites

The head of Switzerland’s Jewish community umbrella organisation Herbert Winter has called on the government to provide greater resources for security at community institutions.

Speaking at a meeting of comunity delegates of the Swiss Federation of Jewish Communities held in Lausanne,  Winter said that Jewish comunities were particularly under threat and that this was known to the country’s security agencies.

« The communities are at the end of their tether, they spend many milions of francs each year to have private guards, in front of synagogues, schools and institutions, » Winter told the delegates.

« We have written to the authorities to increase public efforts to protect minorities, » he added, pointing out the need for the state to finance these operations which should not have to come out of the communal budget.
