Swedish prime minister condemns outbreak of antisemitism

Sweden’s prime minister and other senior officials condemned a series of antisemitic incidents over the weekend.

A synagogue in Gothenburg was attacked with Molotov cocktails on Saturday night while a day earlier a crowd in Malmö chanted “We are going to shoot Jews.”

“I am outraged by the attack on the synagogue in Gothenburg yesterday and that violence against Jews was incited at a demonstration in Malmö,” said Stefan Löfven, the Social Democrat prime minister, on Sunday. “There is no place for antisemitism in Swedish society. The perpetrators must be held to account. All democratic forces must now work together to build a tolerant and open society in which everyone feels safe.”

Three men were arrested on Sunday in Gothenburg following reports that about 20 masked people attacked the synagogue.

Margot Wallström, Sweden’s foreign minister, described the calls to violence as “deplorable and unacceptable”. She added: “Antisemitism, threats and violence have no place in our society.”
