Landskrona to open museum honouring the 1943 rescue of Danish Jews by Sweden

Landskrona is set to open a new museum branch to commemorate the rescue of Danish Jews who fled to Sweden in 1943 during World War II.

Thousands of Danish Jews escaped Nazi persecution by crossing the Sound, seeking refuge in Sweden. Many arrived in the city of Landskrona and nearby Ven, where they were sheltered and cared for.

This museum will shed light on that significant chapter of the city’s history, preserving it for future generations.

Torkild Strandberg, chairman of the municipal board in Landskrona, emphasised the significance of this project, saying: “In the autumn of 1943, Danish Jews fled for their lives, and many found safety here in Landskrona. The city played a crucial role in sheltering refugees, and many local residents became deeply involved in caring for those who had escaped. This part of our history risks being forgotten if we don’t pass it on.”

A key goal of the exhibition is to engage the younger generation, particularly students in their final years of primary school.

Anna Hansen, head of the cultural administration in Landskrona, explained, “We want to ensure that young people in Landskrona are aware of the city’s role in European and Swedish history. This exhibition will help them understand the importance of Landskrona as a place of refuge during a time of great crisis.”

The museum branch is planned to be open from June 2026 to September 2029, spanning four years and offering a comprehensive exploration of the city’s connection to World War II and refugee reception.

The exhibition will reflect multiple aspects of refugee life in Landskrona, aiming to reach a wide audience and foster a deeper understanding of the city’s historical significance.
