The Centro-Sefarad Israel, in cooperation with the The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE), the Spanish Foreign Ministry, the Jewish Community of Madrid and Yad Vashem, will hold a virtual ceremony in honour of 40 years of the passing of Spanish diplomat Ángel Sanz Briz on June 11, 2020 at 18:00 CET.
Mr. Sanz Briz, a Spanish diplomat known as the ‘Angel of Budapest’, saved the lives of 5,000 Hungarian Jews during World War II.
The event will take place on the YouTube channel of Centro Sefarad-Israel and will count with the participation of children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of Sanz Briz; Eva Leitman Bohrer, who was saved by the Spanish diplomat; the president of the FCJE, Isaac Benzaquén, as well as representatives of the Spanish government.
Ángel Sánz Briz served as charge d’affaires and at the Spanish embassy in Budapest in 1944, a year which marked a high point in the persecution of Jews in the country. By issuing through letters of protection, Sanz Briz managed to save the lives of 5,000 Hungarian Jews.
Following these heroic acts, Mr. Sanz Briz was recognised as Righteous Among the Nations by Yad Vashem.
