The 2024 Antisemitism Report, published by the Antisemitism Observatory — a joint initiative of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain and the Movement Against Intolerance — reveals a record-breaking 321% rise in antisemitic incidents compared to 2023, and a 567% increase since 2022.
The report attributes this alarming surge primarily to the impact of the Israel–Hamas war, which triggered a wave of hate speech targeting the Jewish community, both in public spaces and across social media platforms. These platforms, the report notes, became massive channels for the dissemination of hatred against Spanish Jews.
Other key findings include:
- Widespread anonymity and impunity, with many cases going unreported due to fear and the inaction of digital platforms.
- A shift toward more subtle forms of antisemitism, often disguised as anti-Zionism, and increasingly present in political, academic, cultural, and social discourse.
- A growing sense of insecurity within Spain’s Jewish community, with many individuals expressing concern about publicly expressing their identity.
- Despite some progress led by civil society groups, the report points to major shortcomings in the institutional and governmental response, especially regarding the prevention and prosecution of antisemitic hate crimes.
