Several Spanish organisations, some reportedly funded by Iran, are planning to hold events across the country on 6 and 7 October to commemorate the Hamas attack on Israel.
In a related protest, the Spanish postal workers’ union has announced a strike for 9 October to denounce “Israeli aggression,” including the massacre that occurred in southern Israel.
The Israeli embassy in Madrid has urged Spanish authorities to cancel a planned parade by the Masar Badil organisation, which aims to celebrate the actions of Hamas in the city.
Despite the embassy’s requests, the parade is still scheduled to take place. Israeli officials have stated that the embassy “works tirelessly to counter the Palestinian narrative and ensure that Israel’s voice is heard – both among government and opposition officials and within the Spanish public.”
Israel’s ambassador to Spain, Rodica Radian, was recalled in May and has since retired. Her successor, Zvi Vapni, is awaiting a government decision on when to assume the post.
“Israel’s frustration with Spain’s recent conduct is understandable and justified, but it is time to take action again,” sources stated. “We need to send an ambassador to Madrid and adopt a firm and proactive stance to address the ongoing deterioration in relations. We must not lose Spain, and to prevent this, we need to operate at full capacity within the country.”
