The president of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Spain (FCJE), David Obadía, was awarded the Encomienda de Número of the Order of Civil Merit, presented by Spain’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, in recognition of his services and contributions.
The distinction is one of the highest grades within the Order of Civil Merit, a decoration established by King Alfonso XIII in 1926 to acknowledge individuals who have rendered significant services to the State, demonstrated outstanding civic merit, or shown exemplary conduct in the fulfilment of their duties.
During the ceremony, the Foreign Minister highlighted the contribution of Spain’s Jewish community as an essential part of the country’s social fabric, underlining its role in public life and civic engagement.
In his acceptance speech, Obadía delivered an emotional address, interspersed with personal anecdotes, reflecting on his work and the significance of the honour. He was accompanied by family members and friends who joined him for the occasion.
The award marks a formal recognition of Obadía’s leadership within the FCJE and his broader contribution to strengthening ties between the Jewish community and Spanish society.
