FCJE condemns the serious incidents that forced the suspension of the Vuelta a España in Madrid

The Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain (FCJE) issued a statement strongly condemning the serious incidents that led to the cancellation of the Vuelta a España.

The FCJE expressed its unequivocal condemnation of the violent incidents perpetrated by pro-Palestinian groups that forced the cancellation of the final stage of the Vuelta a España.

The FCJE considers that turning an international sporting event into a scene of violent agitation is utterly unacceptable. Violence and intimidation have no place in a democratic society and cannot be justified under the false banner of freedom of expression. These events constitute a direct threat to public order, social cohesion, and the safety of citizens.

The FCJE warns that such violent demonstrations fuel hatred and contribute to a worrying rise in antisemitism in Spain, which we have been highlighting over the past two years. It is intolerable that violence is justified and hostility towards the Jewish community is sown under ideological pretences.

“We call on the authorities to act responsibly and firmly, ensuring at all times that such behaviours are neither encouraged, tolerated, nor whitewashed. Any leniency towards violence represents a democratic setback and a serious risk to social cohesion” said the FCJE.
