Loving Slovak Jewish couple passes away within a few hours of each other

Within a few hours of each other, Peter Schwarcz, the long-time President of the Jewish community of Nitra, and his wife Katarína Schwarczová passed away from COVID-19 on January 1, 2021.

JUDr. Peter Schwarcz (1947), was born in Zlaté Moravce, into a traditional Jewish family. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Bratislava, where he successfully completed his studies in 1972. After graduating, he settled with his family – his wife and two sons in Nitra, where he worked professionally in civil law until his retirement.

From the mid-1990s he was a member of the board of the Jewish community of Nitra, in Western Slovakia which he led since 2007. He sought to revive the community’s activities and to unite its membership. He organized joint religious and cultural events, for future generations he kept the memory of past generations. He always said – traditions will survive if we respectfully pass them on to the next generation.

May their memory be a blessing. Baruch Dayan HaEmet.
