Families of Jewish refugees saved by Aristides de Sousa Mendes hosted by President of Portugal

President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa received six families of Jewish refugees who obtained visas signed by Aristides de Sousa Mendes, thus managing to escape from Bordeaux, France, to Portugal during the Second World War.

One of those present, Marc Cassier, aged five at the time, received the visa himself from the Portuguese Consul.

Marc Cassier, his family and the rest of the group of descendants, from the United States of America, travelled to Bordeaux, Spain and several Portuguese cities, on a “Path of Freedom”, a trip promoted by the Sousa Mendes Foundation – US, which ended at the Belém Palace.
