Aristides de Sousa Mendes house-museum inaugurated

Portugal inaugurated the Aristides de Sousa Mendes House-Museum in Cabanas de Viriato, Carregal do Sal.

The museum features a collection related to the former Portuguese consul in Bordeaux, France, who issued visas to Jews, aiding them during the Holocaust.

José Miguel Weinberg, a member of the Board of the Jewish Community of Lisbon, represented the community at the inauguration of the Aristides de Sousa Mendes Museum, held in Cabanas de Viriato, Carregal do Sal, the birthplace of the consul 139 years ago.

The ceremony was attended by President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, along with numerous politicians, authorities, diplomats, and representatives from various organisations.

The Israeli Ambassador to Portugal, Dor Shapira, was also present, as well as several relatives of Consul Aristides de Sousa Mendes and descendants of the survivors he rescued during World War II.
