The President of the Jewish Community in Montenegro, Nina Ofner Bokan, met with the country’s president Milo Đukanović.
During the meeting, Mr. Đukanović emphasised that Montenegro is a country to which every form of antisemitism is foreign, made reference to the inalienable values of freedom and anti-fascism.
The President expressed interest in the realisation of the project of building a synagogue and a Jewish Cultural Center in the country’s capital, Podgorica, and used the opportunity to directly express satisfaction regarding the admission of the Jewish Community of Montenegro to the European Jewish Congress.
Ms. Ofner Bokan thanked the President for the support during the establishment of the Jewish Community and assistance in the implementation of its activities for many years and conveyed to him cordial greetings on behalf of EJC President Dr. Moshe Kantor.
She agreed with President Đukanović’s assessment of antisemitism in Montenegrin society, and added that Jews in Montenegro feel completely safe as rarely elsewhere in the world.
Following the meeting, Ms. Ofner Bokan invited the President to light Hanukkah candles.
