Lithuanian General Prosecutor seeks to lift Žemaitaitis’ immunity amid hate speech charges

Prosecutor Justas Laučius has asked the Vilnius Regional Court to initiate the process of lifting the legal immunity of Remigijus Žemaitaitis in the new parliament. The politician is being investigated for antisemitic hate speech.

Prosecutor General Nida Grunskienė will have to formally ask the Seimas to strip the elected MP of his immunity.

The move comes as the court examines a case in which the leader of the Dawn of the Nemunas party is charged with inciting hatred against the Jewish people.

Žemaitaitis has previously promised to waive his immunity as he denies his statements were antisemitic or hate speech.

“I have no objections,” he said in response to the prosecutor’s request.
