Milan’s police prefect visits the Garden of Righteous

The police prefect of Milan, Renato Saccone, visited the city’s Garden of Righteous for the first time.

“Before the Righteous and the Tree of Virtue, one may feel a little inadequate, because we are all human beings but we can all aspire to be Righteous,” he said.

The Garden was established in 2003 as result of the collaboration between the Gariwo Association, the Municipality of Milan and the Union of Italian Jewish Communities (UCEI), the country’s EJC affiliate.

The prefect was escorted by the president of Gariwo Gabriele Nissim and UCEI Vice-President Giorgio Mortara.

Sacconi recalled the difficult weeks of the pandemic and paid tribute to health workers.

“Some of them are no longer with us. Now we must thank those who gave us so much and do not forget it and this I think is also the goal of this Garden, because if we have a limit it is our short memory,” he said.

“In my turn I thank the prefect because, on the occasion of his visit, the Garden comes back to life and to be a symbol of life and hope”, Nissim commented. “We want the stories of the Righteous to be an example to future generations.”

Taking part in the visit were also Pietro Kuciukian, Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Italy and co-founder of Gariwo, and Anna Maria Samuelli, head of the Education Commission of Gariwo.
