Italy pushes to label Iran’s revolutionary guard a terrorist group

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said he would formally propose in Brussels to add Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) to the EU terrorist list.

“In Iran, the losses suffered by the civilian population during the [ongoing] protests impose a clear response,” Tajani wrote on X, calling for the terrorist designation of the IRGC as well as individual sanctions targeting those responsible for the crackdown.

EU foreign ministers are expected to decide on a new sanctions package that would list 21 individuals under the bloc’s human rights sanctions regime and 10 companies involved in drone manufacturing.

The package, as it stands, does not include the IRGC listing, despite mounting pressure from several member states to target the 200,000-strong force accused of playing a central role in suppressing protests.
