In a recent statement, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi highlighted ongoing efforts and concerns regarding antisemitism in Italy. Responding to a question in the Chamber of Deputies about measures against Nazi-fascist propaganda, racial hatred, homophobia, and antisemitism, Piantedosi reported significant developments in combating these issues.
During 2023, the government’s efforts led to 37 people being reported to judicial authorities and one arrest for racial discrimination. In the first half of 2024 alone, there have been 47 complaints and 3 arrests related to antisemitic conduct. Specifically, in the first six months of 2024, 22 people were reported for antisemitic behavior, mirroring the number of reports from the entire previous year.
Piantedosi emphasized the ethical and institutional responsibility of addressing antisemitism. He condemned the recent display of totalitarian symbols and the burning of Israeli flags during demonstrations, calling these actions a troubling resurgence of antisemitism. The minister stressed that such behavior, including attacks on Jewish brigades and other similar incidents, reflects a cross-sectional and unacceptable revival of antisemitic sentiments that must be countered vigorously.
He reiterated his commitment to combating all forms of antisemitism and reiterated that the troubling episodes of the past months highlight the urgent need for a comprehensive and unwavering response to this issue.
