Some 500 neo-Nazis marched through a park in Budapest to commemorate an attempt by German SS units and their allies to defend the Hungarian capital from the approach of Soviet troops during World War II.
German and Hungarian forces carried out a failed attempt to break out of Budapest during the Soviet siege of the city in February 1945. Each year, right-wing extremist groups and neo-Nazis mark the anniversary of what they call the “Day of Honour.”
Hungary’s police had initially banned the gathering which was then allowed by a judge in Budapest who cited people’s right to assemble. Hundreds of counter-demonstrators also showed up at the gathering, according to news site index.hu. Police kept the two groups apart to prevent clashes.
