Holocaust Memorial Day in Sátoraljaújhely

The Hungarian city of Sátoraljaújhely commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Holocaust with a series of poignant events.

Locals and members of the Jewish community, including Dr Andor Grósz, President of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Hungary, gathered to honour the 15,000 Jews from Zemplén deported during the Second World War, many of whom were sent to Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1944.

The day began with the opening of a Holocaust exhibition at the PIM Kazinczy Ferenc Museum, showcasing artefacts and personal stories from the local Jewish community. The exhibition will remain open for six weeks, with high school students from the region encouraged to visit.

In the afternoon, a ceremony took place at the former ghetto site, where Rabbi Zoltán Radnóti led a prayer. A commemorative walk followed, retracing the deportation route to the “small station”, culminating in a moving speech by Prof Dr Tibor Zinner.

The day concluded with a concert titled “Ghetto Melodies”, featuring performances that evoked the loss and suffering of the Holocaust through music.
