French President Emmanuel Macron visited the Kozma Street Jewish cemetery with András Heisler, President of the Mazsihisz, the Chief Rabbi Péter Kardos, and several members of Agnes Heller’s family, including her daughter and a granddaughter.
Emmanuel Macron immediately started a conversation with András Heisler, who spoke to him in French and English. As they walked towards Ágnes Heller’s grave, the head of state showed interest into the personal story of Heisler and Chief Rabbi Kardos.
At Agnes Heller’s grave, the President laid a bouquet of flowers.
Macron said that he first read the texts of Agnes Heller, which struck him because they were a “meaningful analysis of Europe”. “I read her long before we met in person,” he added.
András Heisler and Chief Rabbi Kardos then accompanied the President to the memorial, where they laid stones of remembrance.
Before getting back into his car, Heisler gave Macron a book by Heller in French entitled “Au-delà de soi – Identité et représentation” (Beyond the Self – Identity and Representation).
