Greek President signs decree for the construction of Thessaloniki Holocaust museum

The Greek Jewish community has welcomed the signing of a presidential decree on authorising the go-ahead for the construction of a Holocaust museum in the city of Thessaloniki.

In a statement from the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece, the Board’s President and the President of the Jewish community of Thessaloniki, David Saltiel, expressed his deep satisfaction with the success of the efforts made by the local community as well as the friendly and fruitful cooperation with the President and CEO of the company Gaiaose, Athanassios Schizas, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Yannis Boutaris, for the construction of the Holocaust Museum of Greece at the site of the old railway station in the city.

The Presidential Decree was signed on 29 December 2017 and published in the Official Government Gazette (issue no. 293) and paves the way for the realisation of this important project.

The museum in Thessaloniki, whose 50,000 citizens were exterminated in the Nazi camps, “will serve as a continuous reminder of the consequences of the prevalence of racism and intolerance, as a memorial of the Holocaust, as a place of defence and promotion of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms of humankind and as a place of peaceful coexistence for all people,” the statement concluded.
