Rosenstraße monument in Berlin vandalised with antisemitic tags

The Berlin memorial, commemorating the Rosenstraße protest of spring 1943, has been defaced. Upon receiving reports from passers-by, Berlin police promptly arrived at the scene, and State Security has already begun investigations.

This monument pays tribute to the brave women who, in 1943, stood up against the Nazi persecution of their Jewish husbands. The protest took place near Alexanderplatz, where the SS and Gestapo had confined the remaining Berlin Jews living in so-called “mixed marriages” as defined by the Nazis. Beginning in February 1943, their non-Jewish wives and other relatives staged a protest outside the building, which has since been demolished.

The building at Rosenstraße 2-4 once housed the Department of Welfare and Youth Services of the Jewish Community. Adjacent to it stood Berlin’s oldest synagogue, which remained in use until 1942 and was completely destroyed during the Second World War.
