New Bundestag President: “No form of antisemitism must be allowed to become socially acceptable; none is tolerable or excusable”

The new President of the Bundestag, CDU MP Julia Klöckner, who was elected by a simple majority, warned against rising antisemitism in Germany, stating that safeguarding Jewish life and strengthening Germany’s relationship with Israel would be among her key priorities.

During her speech, Klöckner addressed Israel’s Ambassador Ron Prosor, who was in attendance:

“I am particularly pleased that Israel’s Ambassador Ron Prosor is our guest today. We are once again witnessing increasing attacks on Jewish life. Forces that trivialise National Socialism are gaining strength—not only on the fringes of society. Racist and antisemitic slogans can be heard on the streets, in schoolyards, at universities, and online. No form of antisemitism must be allowed to become socially acceptable; none is tolerable or excusable!”

She continued:

“On 12 May, we will mark the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Germany and Israel. Dear Ambassador, the commitment to Jewish life in Germany and Germany’s relationship with the State of Israel will be a matter of great importance to me in my role.”
