Bundestag passes resolution against antisemitism at German universities

The Bundestag has adopted a resolution against antisemitism and hostility towards Israel in the education and science sectors.

The resolution provides for sanctions against antisemitic behaviour in educational institutions. “These include the consistent application of house rules, temporary exclusion from classes or studies, and even (…) expulsion.”

It also calls for increased support and further training for teachers. Pupils should learn more about Jewish life and visit a memorial site at least once during their school years. Additionally, greater security should be ensured for Jews at universities, regardless of whether they are students, staff, or lecturers. Research into antisemitism should also receive stronger support. At the same time, it should be ensured that “federal funding is awarded exclusively according to the standard of scientific excellence.”

The resolution consists of demands and recommendations but has no direct legal effect.
