Berlin names square after late Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer

Berlin is renaming a square after Holocaust survivor Margot Friedländer, who died in 2025 at the age of 103.

The forecourt of the Berlin House of Representatives in the central Mitte district will bear Friedländer’s name in future. The building houses Berlin’s state parliament.

Mayor Kai Wegner is due to announce details at a press conference.

Friedländer, who was born in Berlin in 1921, went into hiding in the city but was captured and sent to the Theresienstadt concentration camp.

After World War II she moved to the United States, but returned to Berlin in 2010 and devoted much of her time to speaking to school aged children about the Holocaust.

An honorary citizen of Berlin, she died on May 9 2025 and was buried in the Jewish cemetery in the Weissen district of the German capital.

In recent months, there have been several proposals in Berlin to preserve her legacy.

Ideas included renaming a square in Charlottenburg, a street in Kreuzberg or a school in Neukölln after her. A memorial was also discussed.
