The protection of Jewish life should be enshrined in the Bavarian Constitution. The Bavarian State Association for the Preservation of Homeland Culture has launched an initiative to this end.
The campaign aims to respond to the growing antisemitism in the Free State of Bavaria. “It would be desirable for the state parliament to address the issue of amending the constitution as soon as possible,” said Olaf Heinrich, chairman of the state association. “We have already received signals from Jewish circles that confirm our commitment to this plan.”
However, the initiative faces a significant hurdle: in Bavaria, constitutional amendments must be approved by the people. The last such amendment took place in 2013, when, alongside the state elections, five new state objectives were added to the constitution. These included the promotion of equal living and working conditions and the guarantee of adequate financial resources for municipalities from the state.
The idea of placing Jewish life under special state protection is not entirely new. Several federal states have already included similar provisions in their constitutions. Most recently, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania followed suit in February 2025.
