Sharp fall in racist acts in France in 2016

After 2015 proved a record year for racist, antisemitic and anti-Muslim attacks in France, last year saw a sharp reduction in such acts according to figures announced by the Ministry of the Interior.

The overall number of racist incidents fell from 2,034 in 2015, to 1,125 last year, representing a reduction of close to 45 per cent.

Incidents noted included violence, arson and desecrations as well as threats either leading to police investigations or criminal charges.

Antisemitic incidents fell by 58.5 per cent in 2016 while incidents targeting Muslims fell by 57.6 per cent.

The sharp drop in incidents follows the launching of a 100 million euros plan of action by the government in 2015 to fight racism, antisemitism and all forms of discrimination.
