Lyon Metropolitan Council approves the creation of a Shoah Memorial

The Lyon Metropolitan Council adopted a subsidy of €75,000 for the construction of a Holocaust memorial on Place Carnot, in Lyon.

A place of memory that the association carrying the project hopes to inaugurate on January 27, 2025 for the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz camp.

The metropolis of Lyon is not the only community to participate in the financing of the project for a total amount of 500,000 euros. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region notably announced funding of 150,000 euros. Nearly 400,000 euros have already been collected.

The future monument must be visible from all points of Place Carnot, which borders Perrache station, and must be accessible to allow unhindered meditation, gatherings and commemorations.

“ I am delighted with the materialization of this project, which has been awaited for too long by associations and players in the memory of the Holocaust. This place will make it possible to anchor this memory on the metropolitan territory, marked by the drama of the Second World War”, declared for his part Bruno Bernard, president of the metropolis of Lyon.
