Jewish man targeted in attempted sexual assault fueled by antisemitism in Seine-Saint-Denis

According to information reported by Europe 1, a 22-year-old Jewish man was the victim of an attempted rape in early October in Seine-Saint-Denis. His lawyer shared details of the incident with the media.

The attack took place as the young man was on his way home from work. He was approached by two individuals who first asked him for a cigarette and then demanded his phone, where they found images of the Israeli and LGBT flags. Upon seeing these, the attackers unleashed a barrage of antisemitic and homophobic insults, and one proceeded to lower his trousers with the intent to assault him sexually.

The assault was halted by the timely intervention of passers-by, who also apprehended the two suspects as they tried to flee. The attackers, aged 16 and 19, both Algerians with irregular immigration status, were placed in pre-trial detention. One of them is now subject to deportation proceedings from France. The lawyer reported that the young man is traumatised and struggling with flashbacks and nightmares, facing a long path to recovery.
