The left facade of the Hyper Cacher supermarket in the 20th arrondissement of Paris, the site of the 2015 hostage crisis, was set on fire. CCTV footage shows a man igniting containers outside the store before setting fire to a nearby construction dumpster in Saint-Mandé (Val-de-Marne).
Firefighters swiftly contained the blaze, leaving the facade blackened but causing no injuries. No graffiti or claims of responsibility were found. The Paris prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into wilful damage by fire.
Despite the attack, the store reopened with customers continuing their routines. “We’ll stick together until the end,” said Shira, a long-time shopper. Another woman, who moved to Israel in 2015, expressed feeling less safe in Paris than in Israel.
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo condemned the attack as a “heinous act” and suggested its likely antisemitic motive.
On 9 January 2015, terrorist Amedy Coulibaly stormed the Hyper Cacher store, taking 17 hostages and killing four people. This attack occurred just two days after the Charlie Hebdo massacre.
In January 2025, on the eve of the attack’s tenth anniversary, antisemitic graffiti, including Stars of David, appeared in Saint-Mandé, Vincennes, and Montreuil. A 48-year-old man was later convicted and sentenced to six months in prison.
