Marseille square to be named after Chief Rabbi of France Joseph Sitruck

Joseph Sitruk became Chief Rabbi of Marseille in 1975 and greatly contributed to the development of the Jewish community in Marseille.

Thanks to his commitment, a real Jewish Life in Marseille emerged. Grocery stores, community centers, schools and social centers were created while he was Chief Rabbi. In 1987, he left Marseille to become Chief Rabbi of France.

By naming a Square after him, the City of Marseille pays tribute to a man that always kept a special affection for the Phocaean city.

“Place Joseph Sitruk” is located in the 10th arrondissement, at the crossing of boulevard Fernand Bonnefoy and Avenue de la Capelette.
